Campaign Rules: Unit Advancement

[from John Hills, Samuel Reynolds]

These rules should add variety and campaign continuity to FR! games. They result in such things as contraptions that pack a wallop but don't rally well (+2,0,0), or that take a licking but keep coming (0,+2,0). They also create "intermediate" units, whose bonuses fall between those of normal and elite.

As a result, they also complicate bookkeeping. Instead of simply remembering bonuses for normal and elite units, you must record specific bonuses for each unit.

These rules have not yet been playtested.

Survivors Advance

Infantry, cavalry, and machines can improve through experience. The rules for their improvement are presented here. Monsters and specials do not improve through experience.

New units are "raw" units; they are at -1 CF and Rally until they fight in and survive a battle. They then become normal. A raw unit that never participates in melee remains a raw unit.

After a battle, each normal unit that killed an enemy unit and survived rolls a d10. On a 10 the unit gains either +1 CF or +1 rally; roll d2 to determine which. A given unit may receive only two such advancements, sufficient to make it an Elite with either (+1,+1,0), (+2,0,0), or (0,+2,0) bonuses.

After a battle, each normal unit with bowfire that killed an enemy unit and survived rolls a d10. On a 10 the unit gains +1 CF, +1 rally, or a +1 to hit; roll d3 to determine which. A given unit may receive only two such advancements, sufficient to make it an Elite with either (+1,+1,0), (0,+1,+1), (+2,0,0), or (0,+2,0) bonuses. (Re-roll any second advancement roll that would result in an elite status other than those listed.)

After a battle, each artillery unit that killed an enemy unit and survived rolls a d10. On a 10 the unit gains either +1 rally or +1 to hit; roll d2 to determine which. A given artillery unit may receive only two such advancements, sufficient to make it an Elite with either (0,+1,+1), (0,+2,0), or (0,0,+2) bonuses.

After a battle, each contraption that killed an enemy unit and survived rolls a d10. On a 10 the unit gains either +1 CF or +1 rally; roll d2 to determine which. A given contraption may receive only two such advancements, sufficient to make it an Elite with either (+1,+1,0), (+2,0,0), or (0,+2,0) bonuses.
